Back in the day, all speedcubes had springs below the center caps to create the 'elastic' springy feel. However, these days many cubing manufacturers are swapping the springs for 2 repelling ring magnets.
2 ring magnets placed back to back will repel each other and create a unique sort of 'springy' feeling when used in place of an actual spring.
Pros
- Unique feel
- Faster
Cons
- More expensive
- Heavier
- Less control
Conclusion
Speedcubers generally fall into two groups when it comes to cube preferences. Those who prefer stability and better control often stick with non-maglev cubes, as the spring system provides a more consistent feel. On the other hand, cubers who value speed and fast turning tend to prefer maglev cubes for their smoother and quicker performance.
